What Changed in 2026?
If you have been following Canadian immigration, you know that 2025 and 2026 brought some big changes. Here is a quick summary of what matters most:
- Job offer points removed from Express Entry - As of March 2025, having a job offer no longer gives you extra CRS points. Your score is now purely based on your age, education, language, and experience.
- Student Direct Stream closed - The fast-track SDS for students from India, China, and other countries was permanently shut down in November 2024. Everyone now goes through the regular process.
- Higher financial requirements for students - You now need to show roughly $22,895 CAD plus tuition, which is nearly double what it used to be.
- Start-up Visa paused - The entrepreneur immigration program is on hold since January 2026 to clear backlogs.
- Stricter work permit rules - The high-wage LMIA threshold went up by 20% above the provincial median, pushing more jobs into the low-wage category with tighter caps.
- Spousal work permits narrowed - Only spouses of skilled workers and graduate-level students can get open work permits now.
Important: Canadian immigration rules change frequently. This guide reflects the framework as of February 2026. Always verify current requirements on the official IRCC website before making decisions.
